Ben Cartwright, BSc Geography
Current employer: Cushman & Wakefield LLP

"Studying at Durham University taught me the importance of commercial awareness, organisation and taking the initiative.

My top piece of advice to students would be to get as much experience as possible before applying for a place on one of the top graduate schemes."

Summer Abuzayeed, MA Community and Youth Work 2012. Current employer: Right To Play, Amman, Jordan

"My education at Durham University was fantastic preparation for this role. The day-to-day interaction with professionals for the whole two years of the course enabled me to enrich my own experience and understanding. The detailed focus on current global issues, management, community mobilization, community and youth policy and practice was ideal for my needs. The experiences gained on the placements with Investing In Children, Moving On allowed me to apply my new knowledge in the real world under the supervision of great practitioners.

My advice to potential and current students is to go for it and make every day in the University count."

Vivien Tse, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance
Current Employer: Deloitte

"I have benefited from the high quality of teaching and the course structure at Durham University. The combination of excellent teaching, training and hands-on experience put me in a great position to apply for graduate jobs.

As a Durham student I was set regular team projects in which we analysed business problems and presented complex ideas, which was an excellent opportunity to develop our presentation and interpersonal skills.

My advice to current Durham students is to be proactive in finding solutions for academic challenges and in finding new opportunitiesto develop yourself."

Tiziana Ellul,
Current Employer: Valletta Fund Services Limited

"I chose Durham because of the reputation it carries, the rankings, and the multi-cultural student body. Durham Business School also has all the resources and facilities a student needs. Although a small town in the North-East of the UK, Durham has its own character and is an ideal place for study. Most of the students within my college were international, which made it easier for me as a foreigner because we all wanted to get to know each other and make friends.

The experience I gained during my time at Durham UNiversity is helping me build confidence and courage to face the new challenges ahead. Obviously learning has to be continuous and this has been a fantastic starting point to my HR career.

Looking back, Durham University has not only equipped me with great academic knowledge but also an experience of a lifetime which I will cherish all my life."

Thomas Welch, BSc natural Sciences
Current employer: BBC Researcher for Bang Goes the Theory

"Natural Sciences proved to be an extrmely useful degree. Studying biology, geography, earth sciences and anthropology at Durham University I had a reasonable starting point when making a science film.

I helped set up Palatinate Multimedia and made some videos for the online section in the period between exams and results, this is a great time to get involved in projects and gain experience. Having these opportunities was undoubtedly the key in then getting onto the highly competitive masters programme and beginning my career."
