Leisure and socialising
In addition to Durham's wide variety of eateries, shops and bars, we have a good selection of University leisure facilities. Both on Campus and outside of the Campus, there are a wide variety of venues where you can relax and chill out with your friends.
Cafés and bars
Our Kingsgate Bar boasts some of the best views in the City and our café offers the best value premium coffee in Durham. We host Jazz Café as well as some of the biggest nights in Durham including Planet of Sound and Revolver. Across our Durham City location there are University YUM cafe outlets offering drinks and snacks including soups, baked pastries and a new panini range. There's also the new Palatine Restaurant and Cafe, located in the Palatine Centre.
At Queen's Campus, Café Aroma provides a comfortable, laid back, contemporary setting offering a range of Fairtrade products including delicious homemade pastries and cakes, and a selection of hot snacks and drinks. The café is based in the Ebsworth Building. Cold drinks and confectionery are also available from many vending machines around the Campus.
A modern, sophisticated venue on the water front, the Waterside at Queen's Campus is home to the Colleges' Bar and is also the main food servery on the Campus. Offering a wide variety of hot and cold dishes including healthy eating options, pastas, carvery, vegetarian and halal choices, twice a week each of our Queen's Campus colleges have their evening dining in the Waterside - a great chance to get together with members of your college. In addition, the YUM deli bar adjoining the main Waterside provides a select-your-own salads and sandwiches service offering a range of delicious and varied fillings. If you are in a hurry you can simply choose from the YUM 'grab and go' selection of sandwiches or salads and hot or cold beverages.
The Waterside is a great place for students to eat and relax during the day, and since its recent refurbishment it's been home to many successful evening events! Will Kruis, Stephenson JCR President 10/11
Every college boasts its own bar, accessible to all University students. College bars often feature games facilities, including pool and darts, and plasma screens. Both of our Queen's-based colleges boast brand new, million pound social spaces that include games rooms, TV lounges and chill out areas.
For your convenience we have shops in Durham City selling all those student essentials - many of our colleges also have their own shops, selling essential items, and the city centre is only a short walk away where you'll find well known highstreet stores should you need anything else. At Queen's Campus, there is an on-campus shop and ATM in the Holiday Building, selling all those essentials as well as Durham-branded hoodies, shirts and merchandise! In addition, Stephenson College has its own on-site shop selling a variety of basic goods, and John Snow College is located opposite a Sainsbury's Local supermarket.
