Durham University

Technician Commitment

Julie Morgan Dodds

I am the Technical Officer and Deputy Health and Safety Coordinator for the Department of Engineering. Working closely with the Technical Operations Manager, I provide management of and development of health and safety, and facilities within the department.

I joined the Physics Department as a trainee technician in the Department’s Audio Visual Unit, training in photography and graphic design. My next career move was as a fully trained technician to the department of Applied Physics where I managed the photographic and graphics facilities and supervised a trainee member of staff.

Moving to the Department of Engineering I took over the management of the website and publicity of the department. With sponsorship from Durham University, I achieved ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management, and also BSc in Computing for Business, studying part-time at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle.

In recent years the departmental strategy and staff changes meant that my continuous development took me to a new path of health and safety management. Last year I achieved a diploma in health and safety from Newcastle College enabling me to effectively fully integrate into the position I now hold.

I am Deputy Director of the Engineering EDI committee, a Union safety representative, and I attend Durham University Safety Consultation Committee meetings in this capacity.
