Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find the answer to your questions below, please visit the Knowledge Base section of our website to find more helpful information.

Applicants who have already been confirmed

+Durham was my insurance choice and I was accepted on A Level results day. I'm still waiting for a college allocation. When I receive it am I guaranteed accommodation in college or might I end up living elsewhere?

We are currently working hard to allocate college membership and accommodation to all students who will be joining us this year. If are taking up your place at Durham in 2020, you will have full membership of a college. Your accommodation will be either in college or in college-arranged accommodation in the City with other students. This may be self-catered.

+How can I volunteer to defer?

If you already have a place at Durham for 2020 but would like to request to defer entry to 2021, please complete our webform to let us know. Please make sure you send us your request as soon as possible and no later than 14 October. For any requests received after this date, we cannot guarantee that your request will be considered.

+I was accepted even though I didn't meet the grades in my offer because you had available places at the time. Will you withdraw my place now that more applicants have met the conditions of their offer?

We will not withdraw your place. Taking applicants' grades in good faith, we identified a small number of places that were awarded to applicants who had not quite met the exact conditions of their offer. We will be honouring all of the applications we accepted and we look forward to welcoming you to Durham.

+I was accepted onto my course at Durham even though I didn't get the grades you asked for and have been allocated a different college. Now I meet my offer because of my Centre Assessed Grades, can I be allocated to my original college?

Unfortunately, we are not able to change college allocations for any offer-holders who were already confirmed before 17 August. If you are not happy with your allocated college, you may wish to consider re-applying for 2021 entry. However, we would urge you not to change your year of entry based upon your college. All colleges provide the opportunity to be part of an outstanding and welcoming academic community where you can participate in sports, clubs and societies and receive pastoral and wellbeing support. If you do now wish to begin your studies in 2021, you will need to withdraw your application and apply again next year. Please note that you will once again have the opportunity to state your preference college as part of your application, but we are unable to guarantee that you will be made an offer for your programme or allocated to your preference college.

+I was accepted onto my course at Durham even though I didn't get the grades you asked for and have been allocated a different college. Now I meet my offer because of my Centre Assessed Grades, can I please stay allocated to the new college?

Any offer-holders who already have their college place confirmed by their college will keep their existing college allocation and accommodation.

+I was accepted to Durham as a 'near miss' applicant on A Level results day.

+I was accepted to Durham on A Level results day. I have been allocated a college but have not yet had my accommodation confirmed. I've heard some 2020 students will live outside of college accommodation- am I guaranteed accommodation in college?

Any offer-holders who were already confirmed before 17 August and are taking up their place in 2020 will keep their existing college allocation and are guaranteed accommodation in college.

+I've been accepted with my CAG grades and my place for 2020 has now been confirmed. What happens next?

Once your offer of a place is confirmed, you will need to be allocated college membership and accommodation. This will be taking place from 7 September for applicants who have been confirmed with Durham after meeting the conditions of their offer through CAGs.

Within approximately 5 days of being allocated college membership and accommodation, you will receive emails containing your University log in details, and further guidance on the enrolment process. Further information can be found here.

+I've been accepted with my CAG grades and my place for 2021 has now been confirmed. What happens next?

Once your offer of a place is confirmed, you will need to be allocated college membership and accommodation. This will be taking place from 7 September for applicants who have been confirmed with Durham after meeting the conditions of their offer through CAGs.

College membership and accommodation will first be allocated to students who will be taking up their place in 2020, followed by those who will be joining us in 2021. Further information on college allocation can be found here.

You will then be invited to complete online enrolment and registration approximately 8 weeks before your course begins. At this point, you will receive emails containing your University log in details, and further guidance on the enrolment process. Further information can be found here.

+I've been accepted with my CAG grades and my place has now been confirmed at UCAS. Do I still need to complete the Offer Acceptance Form?

If your offer of a place for either 2020 or 2021 entry has now been confirmed at UCAS, you do not need to complete the Offer Acceptance Form. Please also see the other FAQs on this page for details of next steps for applicants who have been accepted after meeting their offer conditions through CAGs.

+If I volunteer to defer, will I remain allocated to the same college I would have been in for 2020 entry or will I be placed in my original first preference college for 2021 if this is different?

If you have been offered a place at Durham following receipt of your CAGs and choose to defer your place to 2021 entry, you will be guaranteed full membership of your original first preference college if this is what you would like. You will also be guaranteed accommodation in college for your first year. If you prefer, you are able to keep membership of the college you are currently allocated to. To let us know what you would like to do please contact us at colleges.undergrad@durham.ac.uk

If you already have a place at Durham and this offer was not made based on CAGs and you decide to request a deferral, we will do our best to keep your original college allocation and accommodation but cannot guarantee this.

+My place is now confirmed with Durham to start my course in 2020 and I have been allocated a college and accommodation. However I haven't received my enrolment/log in information yet- what do I need to do?

Within approximately 5 days of being allocated college membership and accommodation, you will receive emails containing your University log in details, and further guidance on the enrolment process. Further information can be found here.

+My place is now confirmed with Durham to start my course in 2020. When should I arrive on campus?

You can find information about recommended arrival dates, here.

Once you have been allocated a college and accommodation, your college will provide you with further details about your arrival on campus, including a date and time slot.

Application questions

+Can someone else discuss my application on my behalf?

Due to General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) we can only speak with an applicant (or agent) or someone we’ve had written permission to discuss an application with.

To send us written permission to discuss your application, use our Ask Us webform, entering the email account used in your UCAS application.

+I’ve narrowly missed the conditions of my offer, now what?

If you successfully appeal your results, and meet the conditions of your Durham offer, then we will ensure you a place on your course. We will do our very best to enrol you in 2020. If that is not possible, then you will have a guaranteed place for entry in 2021.

Please read our Appeals and Re-marks webpage for more information.

+I’ve got a place in Durham. Will teaching be in Durham at the start of the term?

We are looking forward to welcoming students to Durham in September. To find out more about our teaching and learning plans for Term 1, please read our teaching and learning FAQs

+I’ve been given a place on a course I didn’t apply to, is this a mistake?

Where we are unable to offer someone a place on the course they applied for, they may be offered ‘a referral’ for another appropriate course. In this instance, please follow the instructions in the email from our Campaigns Team.

Autumn resits

+How do I contact the University to let you know I want to take Autumn 2020 exams?

If you are re-sitting exams in the autumn and have not yet contacted us to tell us about this, please email clearing.support@durham.ac.uk as soon as possible. You do not need to contact us in any other way to let us know.

+Will I need to submit a new application for entry in 2021 if I take Autumn resits?

If you are re-sitting exams in autumn 2020, please tell us about this by emailing clearing.support@durham.ac.uk as soon as possible.

You do not need to submit a new application, unless you have released your application into clearing to seek a place elsewhere. If this is the case, we will commit to making you an offer for 2021 entry, provided you submit your new application by 15 January 2021 and meet the conditions of your offer through re-sits by the end of January 2021.

If you have not yet had your 2020 place confirmed with Durham or have been placed with your insurance choice, we will reinstate or place a hold on your current application until the end of January 2021 and your offer will remain conditional for 2021 entry up to this point.

Bursaries

+My place was confirmed on results day for 2020 but now I have/want to defer to 2021. Will I receive the bursary?

The bursary is available only to students who have been accepted after meeting the conditions of their offer through CAGs and who choose to take up their place at Durham in 2021. More information is available here.

+Where and when can I find out more about the bursary?

We will update these FAQs regularly and this will include further details of the bursary as soon as this is available. You can find out our latest update here

I now meet the conditions of my offer

+I am holding both a firm and insurance offer with Durham. Now my CAGs meet my firm choice. What happens with my college?

We are currently working hard to allocate college membership and accommodation to all students who will be joining us this year. Any offer-holders who already have their college place confirmed by their college will keep their existing college allocation and accommodation.

If you have not yet been allocated a college and are taking up your place in 2020, we cannot guarantee membership of your original first preference college, however, you will have full membership of a college and will be fully part of the college community. Your accommodation will be either in college or in college-arranged accommodation in the City with other students. This may be self-catered.

If, however, you wish to live privately and arrange your own accommodation, please contact your current allocated college and also let us know at colleges.undergrad@durham.ac.uk and we will confirm your college membership in your original first preference college.

+I have met the conditions of my offer with my CAGs. Am I guaranteed my original College preference?

If you choose to come to Durham in 2020, you will be guaranteed a place on your course and have full membership of a college, but not necessarily with the college of your original first preference.

Your accommodation will be either in college or in college-arranged accommodation in the City with other students. This may be self-catered. You will be fully part of the college community.

If you choose 2021 entry, you will be guaranteed a place on your course and have full membership of the college of your original first preference. You will also be guaranteed accommodation in college for your first year.

+I now meet my offer because of my CAGs and originally told you I wanted to begin my studies in 2020, but I am not happy with my college allocation. Can I now defer to 2021 and be guaranteed my original first preference college?

You can select 2021 as your year of entry when you refer your application in Clearing on UCAS Track, even if you have previously told us you wish to begin in 2020. If you do select 2021, you will have full membership of the college of your original first preference and you will also be guaranteed accommodation in college for your first year.

If you have already referred your application to us in Clearing for entry in 2020, this cannot now be changed. We would urge you not to choose your year of entry based upon your college. All colleges provide the opportunity to be part of an outstanding and welcoming academic community where you can participate in sports, clubs and societies and receive pastoral and wellbeing support.

If you do now wish to begin your studies in 2021, you will need to withdraw your application and apply again next year. Please note that you will once again have the opportunity to state your preference college as part of your application, but we are unable to guarantee that you will be made an offer for your programme or allocated to your first preference college.

+I was initially unsuccessful with my Durham Insurance offer. I now meet it with my Centre Assessed Grades but still do not meet my original firm choice. I am currently holding a place with another institution but want to come to Durham.

If you meet your offer because of your CAGs, you have a place with Durham. If your offer was for 2020 entry, you can choose whether to take this up in 2020 or in 2021. If your offer was for 2021, then we will reinstate the offer for 2021 entry. Further details on how to do this have been emailed to you. If you have not received these instructions and believe you should have, please email clearing.support@durham.ac.uk as soon as possible and we will be happy to help.

+UCAS have said you should have received my CAG's. Can you please check you have received them/confirm I now meet the conditions of my offer?

If UCAS have advised you of this then we should now be in receipt of your new results.

+Durham was originally my Firm choice. I was initially unsuccessful because I didn't meet my offer. I now meet it with my Centre Assessed Grades and want to come to Durham but am currently holding a place with another institution.

+I was initially unsuccessful with my Insurance Durham offer as I didn't meet my offer conditions. My Centre Assessed Grades mean that I meet both my Insurance and my Firm offer. I am currently holding a place elsewhere but want to come to Durham.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to consider you if you meet the offer from your original firm choice institution. You may be eligible to be accepted for that choice instead.

BTEC Qualifications

+Will you still be able to confirm my place if I meet the conditions?

We have now received most results from examination boards. However, if you have a conditional offer with us but do not yet have your results (whether your original results or Centre Assessed Grades) we will hold your place until 7 September 2020. If meeting any part of your offer requires evidence of results you do not yet have and which examination boards do not provide to us directly, you must send those to us by 7 September at the latest, so that we can confirm our decision. Please upload documents using this form.

Please note, the deadline for submission of outstanding documents was 31 August. Therefore, unless you had not received all results by this date, if you missed the deadline and received an unsuccessful decision at UCAS, we cannot now reconsider you.

If you are disputing or appealing your grades, please do not withhold your results until a decision on that is received, as this may lead to your offer being withdrawn. If your appeal is successful or your grades are changed, we will honour your original offer in line with the arrangements in place for A-level, SQA and IB students.

Receiving centre assessed grades

+How will you receive my Centre Assessed Grades?

Examination boards have provided us with updated results for applicants whose initial results were provided in this way. If meeting any part of your offer requires evidence of updated grades which examination boards do not provide to us directly, you should send this evidence to documents.educators@durham.ac.uk

+Will you accept details of my Centre Assessed Grade from my school?

We can only use Centre Assessed Grades provided by examination boards. This is usually through UCAS.

+My results have gone up now that my grades are based on Centre Assessed Grades but I still don’t quite meet the conditions of your offer. Would you still consider me?

Unfortunately, we can only consider those applicants who have met or exceeded the offer made.
