Developing our students
Opening a New Era of Learning
(10 December 2019)
Our new Teaching and Learning Centre is proving popular with students and staff alike. In its first term alone, the building has housed nearly 4000 hours of teaching from 21 of the University’s academic departments, with classes ranging in size from 20 students to over 450. University Students’ Union Societies have used the building for nearly 2,000 hours over the evenings and weekends.
Today we celebrated the official opening of the Centre. The event welcomed our University Council to explore the £40 million building.
Providing state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, the Centre has created Durham an additional 450 spaces for individual and collaborative study, nearly 200 computer laboratory spaces, high-specification facilities and top-of-the-range digital equipment.
Making our teaching fully inclusive
We are launching the new building alongside our new Access and Participation Plan - by far the most ambitious yet - which lays out how we will radically improve the representation of students from the local area at Durham University, and ensure they have all the support and resources they need to thrive here.
The building has been designed to create an inclusive learning environment and will use digital learning technologies to enable all students to reach their potential.
What’s next for the Teaching and Learning Centre?
Whilst you may already have found your favourite spot to study, and tried a few of the options on the menu in the Café, there’s still so much look forward to.
Look out for the new teaching and learning methods which will be emerging from the Education Laboratory on the third floor. Among a number of other initiatives, they are experimenting with the use of virtual reality to create trans-Atlantic teaching spaces – with students in America and Durham able to learn together through the use technology. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to be involved.
In the New Year, we will be launching a public lecture series where we will host eminent teachers and speakers from around the world to talk on the subject of innovation and inclusion in teaching. More details will follow soon.
