Developing our students
The dawn of a new age of digital learning at Durham
(11 October 2019)
Our new Teaching and Learning Centre has opened its doors. Designed for state-of-the-art student learning, the £40 million construction offers our students the ideal space to study, great facilities and top-of-the-range digital equipment.
Inside the light and bright new building, you will find two modern lecture theatres, as well as a number of other adaptable teaching spaces designed to encourage active learning, 450 new student study spaces and nearly 200 computer laboratory places.
Our lecturers and students will be able to collaborate seamlessly across all digital devices, making ideas sharing and group work easier than ever before. Students’ presentation techniques can be perfected with new recording equipment and high definition video conferencing will be available across the building.
New ideas for a better learning
Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD), based inside the Teaching and Learning Centre are testing exciting and unusual ideas to improve learning and teaching across the University. They are currently looking at playful learning techniques, which even include using video games! The team’s new Education Laboratory will be used to try out ideas like this, and there will be plenty of opportunities for our students to be involved.
Accessible and inclusive
Yet this is only part of the digital transformation taking place at Durham, which will make learning more accessible and inclusive.
Last year, we rolled out Encore, Lecture capture across our teaching rooms. Within the year, we have been recognised internationally for our ground-breaking approach. Nearly 80% of all lectures were captured last year, providing students with additional learning and revision aid, and assisting students whose first language is not English or who have particular educational needs and conditions.
As part of our improved virtual learning environment, students will be able to access and share learning resources in a way that suits them anytime and anywhere.
