Student Support Fund

The Student Support Fund is intended to help with the essential costs of being a student, including but not limited to:

  • accommodation
  • insurance
  • utilities
  • food and household shopping
  • travel
  • clothing
  • laundry
  • childcare costs
  • disability costs
  • course costs.

Other costs may also be supported depending on your personal circumstances.

The Student Support Fund can also award Short-term Loans to students who are facing short-term cash-flow problems and Long Vacation Loans to undergraduates who are not able to support themselves through paid work during the Long Vacation.

The Student Support Fund is available to all students: undergraduate, postgraduate, home, overseas, students who are based in Durham and distance learning students.

It is means-tested on your personal income (not that of your parents/partner). Only students who have a shortfall between the money available to them and their essential expenditure according to our Assessment Procedure will receive money from the Fund.

The Student Support Fund is not able to help with the cost of extra-curricular activities. You may be able to access support towards the cost of extra-curricular activities from your College, the Students' Union, Team Durham or from one of the funds listed in the University's Scholarships and Bursaries Database.

The Student Support Fund is not able to help with the cost of taking part in activities which will benefit your employability and future career (e.g. internships, interviews). Support may be available via the Student Employability Fund.
