College Mentors at St John’s College

Do you want to be part of a friendly and welcoming college community on the Bailey? Would you like to mentor a small group of new students, help them settle into university life at Durham, support their personal development and perhaps introduce them to the North East?

St John’s, a recognised College in Durham University, is now recruiting College Mentors for the new academic year. Set in a series of Georgian townhouses on the Bailey, the College is home to about 500 undergraduates and 160 postgraduates from all disciplines and backgrounds, as well as around 80 members of Cranmer Hall. We have research and teaching staff based in the College, promoting interdisciplinary research and dialogue, and we seek to challenge and grow students’ individual strengths.

Our College Mentors are an important part of our community, each supporting a group of up to 12 students, and meeting each student in person or online at least once a term. The role also involves taking part in college life – from enjoying formal dinners to joining in with seminars and events.

Mentors are offered free membership of the Senior Common Room and we reimburse expenses for entertainment. For more information about the role, please see the Memorandum of Understanding below.

To express interest, email the Senior Tutor’s Office on by 1 August 2020, telling us a bit about yourself and indicating why you would like to become a mentor. We would particularly welcome applications from early career academics, professional support staff, and international staff members of the University.
