College life

Our creative writing course is unique, our intercultural and interfaith exchanges are thriving, and our College spaces can host anything from meditation groups to ‘Live Lounge’ and ‘Open Mic’ evenings. With the emphasis on participation, we have a great tradition of both informal and committed activity: from mixed frisbee to women’s rugby, yoga and meditation to tango, salsa, and classical Indian dance.

We are proud co-founders and hosts of Durham Pride and Durham City of Sanctuary, and of two research centres with community impact and growing global relationships at their heart. Through celebrations like Chinese New Year and international film nights, our Banipal Middle Eastern Writer in Residence Fellowship and JSoc’s Shabbat celebrations, we work towards active citizenship to challenge a fractured world.

We are proud of our inclusive, multicultural and supportive community at St Aidan’s College. We have an experienced Student Support and Development Team based within college who are here to not only provide pastoral support on a day-to-day basis but also to encourage your personal development.
  • Fees and funding

The cost of college accommodation is reviewed annually. You can find out the latest information on our Fees and Funding pages.

Location

Situated at the top of Windmill Hill, if you take a moment of calm near our haunting sculpture by Fenwick Lawson, the view of Durham Cathedral and the dramatic landscape of the city will always inspire you.

In the same way, our modernity embraces sensitivity and respect for the other living histories and struggles of this complex region, where natural beauty and industrial resilience coexist.

Facilities

  • Sporting facilities

We have a college gym that is available for all Aidan’s students to use. We also have our own outdoor sports court, and during the summer months, the gardens are a hive of activity.

  • Library

With its wonderful view of the Cathedral, our spacious library is hidden away in a quiet part of college away from the accommodation.

  • Music and Arts

We have our own music room which was recently refurbished, and can be booked out by students on a daily basis for both private practice or for group/ensemble use.

Find out more about our facilities

The gym contains two treadmills, four rowing machines, three elliptical trainers, two cycles, two recumbent cycles and a brand new multi-gym. This facility has been designed by students to suit their needs and is a fantastic addition to the college.

St Aidan's Library

Open 24/7 for computer use, book borrowing and quiet study, the library contains approximately 14,000 volumes, 13 network computers, a networked printer and plenty of desk space.

St Aidan's Music Room

The room contains its own regularly-tuned piano, a drum kit, and a set of amps for bands. The University Hill Orchestra uses our Hall for their weekly practice and many of our students play with them.
