Biography

Appointed as Teaching Fellow in 2017 at the School of Applied Social Sciences, Cynthia has previously held posts at the University of Chile and the London School of Economics. Her disciplinary route has evolved from a first degree in Social Anthropology and Masters in Anthropology and Development at the University of Chile, to more sociological oriented approaches during her Doctorate at Durham University.

Cynthia’s primary area of research is ageing and the lifecourse. Since 2009 she has been involved in projects addressing quality of life and well-being in older populations, the changing social networks in widowhood, resilience to natural disasters of older individuals in rural communities, the life trajectories and social class identification of British precarious mid-life individuals, and the transitions from mid-life to later life of individuals in Chile. Besides these projects, Cynthia also has experience in research on neighbourhoods and urban segregation, collective memory in multicultural settings, disadvantaged educational communities and the expectations on pre-school educators, volunteering and social collaboration, and the productive reconversion of mining communities.

Cynthia is also an enthusiast of innovative research methods, and relishes in the opportunity of designing unusual approaches to research, such as – but not limited to – combining arts-based research with network analysis, or using cluster analysis of text for making sense of large amounts of archival information.

She currently teaches the postgraduate level module Statistical Exploration and Reasoning, and the level-2 module Sociological Imaginations, as well as contributing to level-2 teaching on Research Methods.
