The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre (DISC) headed by Professor Helen Ball is the home for a group of researchers examining various aspects of infant and child sleep and parenting behaviour.

Our research

Our research covers a broad range of topics including infant and child sleep ecology, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), parental sleep, postnatal ward environments and maternal-infant sleep, and cross-cultural infant care practices.

DISC members collaborate with academics from a wide range of disciplines around the world, and with a variety of research users. In 2018 our research won Durham University the Queen’s Anniversary Prize.

Our services

DISC runs the Baby Sleep Information Source (Basis) website providing research evidence on parent-infant sleep into for use by parents and health professionals. We offer training webinars for health professionals, and run regular workshops and conferences.

Department of Anthropology

The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre (formerly the Parent-Infant Sleep Lab) is a research centre of the Department of Anthropology. It's one of the largest Anthropology Departments in the UK and one of only a few to span Social Anthropology, Evolutionary Anthropology and Anthropology of Health.
