Undergraduate Study

At the School of Government and International Affairs we offer the opportunity to develop a thorough and deep knowledge of the diverse and fascinating world of Political studies. Our students tackle subjects across this broad discipline, taking modules in political theory, comparative politics, and international relations. They could study, for example, modules on the history of ideas, grappling with the most fundamental questions about the nature and purpose of politics, and others that focus on the development of particular regions and their political systems. The department’s approach is interdisciplinary, and our students take optional modules inside and outside SGIA to tailor their degrees to their personal interests and passions.

Throughout their studies, our students will be taught and supported through their chosen programmes by our members of staff all of whom are committed to educational excellence and are consistently supported to innovate in their teaching. We also have dedicated Student Experience Officer within the school to ensure student needs are heard. Our excellent support team in the office complete the SGIA family.

Our graduates leave armed with the critical skills they need for the world of work. They will be self-aware, reflective, and ambitious global citizens.

One of the most liberating aspects of doing a placement year with SGIA at Durham is that it doesn’t have to be related to your degree, leaving you free to pursue a placement in any sector that you are interested in.

A major highlight of the degree for me has been the opportunity to listen to world-renowned speakers on the key political issues of the day. I feel that my degree makes me an ideal candidate for a job in either the public or private sector.
