No visit to Durham would be complete without seeing Durham Cathedral, which together with Durham Castle forms a UNESCO world heritage site. Durham Castle is home to University College, one of the 16 colleges which comprise Durham University. You will have an opportunity to see the Castle for yourself - the Gala Dinner will be held in the Great Hall of the Castle.

Durham University also has a number of other sights to see - the Oriental Museum, Museum of Archaeology and the Botanic Garden. The University maintains a website with details of what's on all year round.

Beyond the University, you may also wish to visit Crook Hall and Gardens, Finchale Priory,  or the DLI Museum and Gallery.

Further afield, Newcastle and Gateshead boast the famous Angel of the North, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Sage Gateshead and the largest shopping centre in Europe, the Metrocentre.

The North East is surrounding by stunning scenery - you can head west to the Durham dales, north to the Northumberland national park, south to the Yorkshire dales or east to explore the North Sea coast and its many beaches.
