Neill Blomkamp came, he saw, but he lost the Alien 5 battle, which is no longer in his current preoccupations.

It’s not that the news is cheerful, but it had to (once again) come out of the director’s mouth, so that his biggest fans could grieve it once and for all. Indeed, Neill Blomkamp was attached a few years ago to a mysterious Alien 5, supposed to be attached to Aliens, the return. Everything seemed to be going well, until his project was scrapped for the benefit of Ridley Scott’s plans with Alien : Covenant. The two continuities hardly being able to advance simultaneously (for rather obscure reasons, moreover), Blomkamp was simply sidelined.

Alien 5 had still had time to excite with some clues and concept arts, which were tantalizing to say the least. While each will form their own opinion on the current state of the franchise (a series Alien happens), it is clear that the work of Blomkamp, including the return of Hicks, has left no one indifferent. Corn 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios under the leadership of Disney) will have decided otherwise. And Ridley Scott would have played a major role in the death of this Alien 5.

The fan who sees his hopes shattered

Asked by The Independent about his latest film, Demonic, the director of District 9 could not avoid the subject Alien 5. But now Blomkamp speaks casually about his stillborn project, while recalling how much Sigourney Weaver (the historical interpreter of Ellen Ripley) was up for.

Asked again about the state of this project, which has clearly been dead since 2017, Blomkamp seems to have given up all hope:

“I’m not sure I would do this project again today. My guess is that it’s completely dead.”

He also looks back on the role of Ridley Scott and Alien : Covenant in this premature end:

“It was a situation where the two projects were moving forward simultaneously at Fox, and one of them was chosen. Sigourney Weaver was incredibly supportive, and fantastic. I have only good things to say about Sigourney. . I’m such a fan of her on every level. She’s always stayed on board, but Fox clearly doesn’t want her. I’ve had nothing to do with it for years. “

Mission aborted

When the journalist points the finger at the enthusiasm still overflowing with some of the fans since the cancellation ofAlien 5, Neill Blomkamp wonders if he could one day find a taste for xenomorphs:

“I wonder if it’s possible to do an entire loop, where we are first in full until everything stops, we lose interest in it and after years, we come back to the point start and we still want to. Maybe it is possible. “

And to the joke of a Alien 5 as the last film of his career, the filmmaker responds with a “Yeah !” quite ironic.

Neill Blomkamp and his bald Matt Damon

I have to say that Neill Blomkamp’s career is no longer so flamboyant as at its promising beginnings. After the box office disappointments of Chappie and Elysium, he made horror shorts with his studio Oats. A story that ended badly, since the crowdfunding project to transform Firebase in feature film, was canceled for lack of money and support. Blomkamp was also linked to RoboCop Returns (which he quickly left) and Greenland when it was announced, with Chris Evans at the time.

Not sure that Demonic, his new film shot by American critics, and which arrives directly on video on September 20 in France, does not help. This is certainly why he clings to a series of District 9.

VENICE MOSTRA 2021. The Venice Film Festival continues with many stars parading on the red carpet. Among them, Oscar Isaac, Kristen Stewart, Timothée Chalamet or Benedict Cumberbatch. Photos.

[Mis à jour le 3 septembre 2021 à 14h53] It’s a parade of stars that has enchanted Venice since the launch of the Mostra on September 1, 2021. Oscar Isaac for The Card Counter, Dune and Scenes from a marriage, Penelope Cruz for Madres Paralelas, Kristen Stewart for Spencer, Benedict Cumberbatch for Power of The Dog … These are celebrities who are eagerly awaited by the public who promote the most anticipated films of this end of the year 2021 and parade on the red carpet in their most beautiful outfits (see the slideshow below) .

In competition to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, let us note the presence in the official selection of the last film by Pedro Almodovar (“Madres Paralelas”), by Jane Campion (“The power of the dog”), by Maggie Gyllenhaal ( “The Lost Daughter”) or Xavier Giannoli (“Lost Illusions”). “Spencer”, a film by Pablo Larrain on Lady Diana, will also be presented at the Venice Film Festival. Out of competition, festival-goers will be able to preview “The Last Duel” by Ridley Scott, “Last Night in Soho” by Edgar Wright or “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve. The Venice Film Festival will end on September 11th. Waiting for, the program of screenings for the day and the following days can be found on the official website of the Venice Film Festival, here.

The Venice Film Festival takes place every year at the end of summer. The 2021 edition of the international film festival of this Italian city is scheduled from 1st to 11 September 2021. The winners of this 78th edition will be known on the last day of the festival.

The 2021 official selection of the Venice Film Festival will have nothing to envy of the Cannes Film Festival, a few months earlier. Among the films in competition, let us note the long-awaited feature films: Jane Campion’s latest film, “The Power of the Dog”, but also “The Lost Daughter” by Maggie Gyllenhaal and “Madres Paralelas” by Pedro Almodovar. “Spencer” by Pablo Larrain will look back on the life of Lady Diana, played by Kirsten Stewart. Let us also note the quotation in competition of the French film “Lost Illusions” by Xavier Giannoli and its five-star cast, but also of the drama “Another world” which brings together Vincent Lindon and Sandrine Kiberlain on the screen. Below, find the complete list of films presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2021:

Among the films presented out of competition, let us note the screenings of films eagerly awaited for the end of the year 2021: this is the case of “Dune”, of Denis Villeneuve, but also of the next film of Ridley Scott, “The Last duel”. “Last Night in Soho”, by Edgar Wright, will also be screened out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, as will Yvan Attal’s latest film, “Human Things”. Ridley Scott, Roberto Benigni and Jamie Lee Curtis will receive a Golden Lion for their respective careers.

The Venice Film Festival takes place over ten days. The event kicks off with a first screening at 4:00 p.m. on September 1, 2021, before the 7:00 p.m. screening of the opening film Madres Paralelas that same day. The event closes on September 11, 2021 with the screening from 8:00 p.m. of the various films awarded during the event. Find the full program of the Venice Film Festival on the official website of the festival.

As is the case for the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Mostra rewards the favorite films of a jury made up of professionals of the international cinema. The 78th edition, which takes place in 2021, is chaired by the South Korean director Bong Joon-ho, to whom we owe the Palme d’Or and the Oscar for best film 2020 “Parasite”. To help him establish a track record, he will be accompanied by the Italian director Saverio Costanzo (“Hungry Hearts”, “The prodigious friend”), by the Franco-Belgian actress Virginie efira (Benedetta, Adieu les cons), by the British actress Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”, “The Widows”), Canadian actress Sarah Gadon (“A dangerous Method”, “Cosmopolis”, “Captive”), from the Romanian director Alexander Nanau (“The Collective Affair”) and the Chinese director Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”, “Les Eternels”).

It is possible to attend the Venice Film Festival as a spectator. Note that film professionals, but also the press, can request accreditation to attend screenings free of charge. The public can buy tickets to attend the screenings of certain prices. Prices vary between 7 and 50 euros per screening depending on the rooms and times. It is also possible to take out a “per room” subscription: this can vary from 35 to 1600 euros depending on the schedule, the room or the location in the room. Find all the information concerning the registration and the purchase of tickets for the Venice Film Festival 2021 on the official website of the festival.

The last Venice Mostra festival was held in 2020. This 77th edition suffered the full brunt of the health crisis linked to the coronavirus, offering a particular version of the festival in which barrier gestures and social distancing were in order. “Nomadland” won the Golden Lion, while the Grand Jury Prize went to “Nuevo Orden”. Below, find the full list of winners of the last Venice Film Festival 2020:

Chronic. The film BAC North surprises since the pandemic plays with the nerves of the cinema. Almost 900,000 admissions in two weeks. It’s huge and the pace does not weaken. Except that this fiction by Cédric Jimenez, centered on three cops powerless in the face of drug trafficking in the northern districts of Marseille, who flout their ethics in order to slow it down, is under attack: it would be pro-police, would reduce young people from cited to animals, would exaggerate the violence, would even play into the hands of the National Rally. The salvo proves that “neighborhoods” will indeed be a subject of the presidential election. The way of representing them too, so many films and series forge a collective imagination.

Cédric Jimenez sees things differently. He did not want to X-ray a city, but “Show why the police, crushed by a system, slip away”. He is one of the rare French filmmakers to film “American-style”, to keep the spectator in suspense, to raise the tension, especially during a hallucinating twenty-minute scene where cops storm a building. Like in a civil war.

On July 13, at the Cannes Film Festival, Cédric Jimenez had to face criticism. Irish journalist from Agence France-Presse (AFP) Fiachra Gibbons opened the ball rolling with his feelings: he finds the film ” very strong “, but he is ” uncomfortable “ that the young people of Marseille are only ” beasts “, wondering even if he’s wrong “Vote Le Pen” after watching it.

It is true that in BAC North, beyond history, we perceive this: in France there are areas of lawlessness; the police are prohibited there and risk a lot; the drug traffickers are armed, always younger, and they are not afraid of anything; their words are structured by insult. Finally, separatism and the impossibility of a social contract emerge.

It did not fail. On the occasion of Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Marseille, from 1is as of September 3, Marine Le Pen tweeted: “While the president is going to do his media show, the reality is BAC North ! Go see him ! “ The filmmaker, who grew up in this difficult Marseille, for whom the solution lies in training and means, much more than through repression, and whose political ideas are far from those of the extreme right, says he is distressed, but he does not budge: “Not showing what I perceive for fear of being recovered is the choice of the worst. “ Jimenez also received a number of supports, including that of Nicolas Mathieu, Prix Goncourt for Their children after them (Actes Sud, 2018). On his Instagram account, the writer greets a film where “The state is corrupted and the thugs are constituting themselves in institutions”. Above all, he adds that the cinema does not have to “Represent the interests of society”. On the contrary.

Everything went well

At 85, André was hospitalized after a stroke. Unable to bear to see himself weakened in this way, he asks his daughter Emmanuèle to help him die. With her sister Pascale, she begins an approach with an association in Switzerland. This is the true story of the writer Emmanuèle Bernheim who recorded it in her book Everything went well (Gallimard). Co-screenwriter and friend of François Ozon, she had offered to adapt it as soon as it was published in 2013, but preferred to shoot it after the death of the author.

François Ozon does not judge. He tells the story of his characters and in particular this very special relationship that the patient has with his daughter. Asking him for such a service is not trivial. Is it because she is his favorite girl? Flashbacks on Emmanuèle’s childhood show the ambivalence of a learned and caustic man whose protagonist will admit that she would have preferred to have him “as a friend rather than as a father”. By his attitude, the father also shakes up the relations between his two daughters, who remain united in spite of himself.

André Dussollier’s game, unrecognizable at first with his facial prostheses, accentuates the playful and perverse side of the father, which strengthens Ozon’s desire to make a film focused on life. As also evidenced by this sequence where Sophie Marceau shines when coming out of a sea bath. For a long time, the filmmaker wanted to shoot with this actress. With the character of Emmanuèle, he offers her one of her best roles, boosted by her energy and all the emotions that she lets express themselves in a breathless finale devoid of pathos.

Francois Ozon

Since Sitcom (1998), he shot almost one film a year with the particularity of changing register each time. Some themes emerge, however, such as his way of linking love, death and creative writing. This was the case withSummer 85 (2020) and, long before, Swimming Pool (2003), co-written with Emmanuèle Bernheim, who lived and wrote the story of Everything went well. This writer had collaborated on three other of her films: Under the sand, 5×2 and Ricky.

The loves of Anaïs

Anaïs is only faithful to her wishes. This is how she cheats on her lover with an older editor (tasty Denis Podalydès) before flashing on her companion (irradiating Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). Anaïs Demoustier is stunning in this light and serious comedy.

A film by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet, with Anaïs Demoustier, Denis Podalydès, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi. In theaters September 15.

Hug me tight

At first, we believe we see the story of a young mother abandoning husband and children. But the reality soon seems more ambiguous. Mathieu Amalric deconstructs his story with great skill to evoke love, absence and loss. Emotion embraces us before reality upsets us.

A film by Mathieu Amalric, with Vicky Krieps, Arieh Worthalter. In theaters September 8.

Available on Netflix, the drama At what price? stars Michael Keaton as Kenneth Feinberg, the lawyer appointed by the US government to compensate the victims of 9/11.

What is it about ?

A look back at the career of the volunteer lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, expert in the compensation of victims such as those of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Boston Marathon attack or the terrorist shooting in Orlando .

At what price ?, a film by Sara Colangelo with Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, Tate Donovan…

The price of a life

What is the value of a life? Who can decide? This is the question posed by this drama and it is above all the question to which Kenneth Feinberg – played by Michael Keaton – had to answer.

He even built his career on the issue of compensation for victims and / or families of victims during tragedies. He deals with the most traumatic cases whose losses are incalculable: Agent Orange, asbestos, the financial crisis … and tries to decide how much should be paid to the injured and the survivors.

Twenty years ago, Kenneth Feinberg and his colleague Camille Biros (Amy Ryan) were called in to determine the amount of money to be paid to the families of those killed or injured on September 11, 2001. Immediately, their proposal Initial settlement was challenged by Charles G. Wolf (Stanley Tucci), whose wife died in the bombings.

Netflix

The amount determined is not intended to compensate families for their grief or loss. This calculation is based only on the economic value of the future income of the deceased. With this embarrassing observation to the key that the family of an office worker would get less than that of a stockbroker.

Manichaeism?

Kenneth Feinberg is presented as a straight man, not a cynic who pulls out his calculator. He has a sense of duty and volunteered for this heavy task on the sole condition of not being paid, ie two years of volunteering.

Despite his qualities, he comes up against the pain of the families of the victims with whom he does not know how to communicate. It is only thanks to the relentlessness of Charles G. Wolf that he will learn to be less rigorous and above all more empathetic.

This is where the film catches. As the 20thth tragic anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the question arises of the cinematographic legacy of this tragedy. It is clear that there are no great films that have been able to bring to the big screen a work equal to this monumental trauma.

And at what cost? is no exception. The manifest will to do in sentimentalism is detrimental to the film. Fortunately, the sober performances of Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan make up (a little) for the writing and directing flaws.

Released on Amazon Prime Video without going through the cinema box, the film “Chaos Walking” which brings together Tom Holland (“Spider-Man”) and Daisy Ridley (the “Star Wars” postlogy) has experienced many production problems.

On paper, Chaos Walking had all the keys in hand to be successful with the public. Adapted from the first part of the literary saga Le Chaos on the move by Patrick Ness, the film directed by Doug Liman (The memory in the skin) brings together a prestigious cast including in particular Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Daisy Ridley (the Star Wars postlogy), but also Nick Jonas and Mads Mikkelsen.

So why Chaos Walking has it not met with the expected success? Originally entrusted to Robert Zemeckis, the film finally changed directors shortly before the start of filming, following the latter’s decision to devote himself to other projects.

His replacement Doug Liman, a filmmaker specializing in big budget productions, is also known in Hollywood for his ability to handle difficult projects; for example, he had not hesitated to start filming Edge of Tomorrow when the film’s script did not yet have an outcome!

An “insortable” film

But at the end of the shooting, the result did not live up to expectations. This is even an understatement, as the result seems distressing in the eyes of the managers of the Lionsgate studio: according to comments reported by the Wall Street Journal, the film would have been particularly qualified “d’insortable” at the end of this nightmarish projection.

While it is common in Hollywood for additional scenes to be filmed (or returned), it is nevertheless here entire sections of the feature film that have been modified in an attempt to minimize the extent of the damage.

“We wouldn’t be shooting additional scenes if we weren’t sure the film would work.” confided to our American colleagues an employee of Lionsgate, remarks that one could not however qualify of a communicative optimizes …

Lionsgate

Millions of additional dollars are thus spent to finance these new shots, an investment which however fails to correct the situation. The sentence is then irrevocable: massacred by American critics when it was released in theaters on March 5, the film is also a monumental oven at the box office, with a total of $ 25 million raised at the international box office for a budget. estimated at … 100 million!

The disaster is of such magnitude that the film was deprived of theatrical release in many countries, including France: it is not in the cinema that French spectators were able to discover Chaos Walking, but directly in SVOD via the Amazon Prime Video platform.

In the past, stubborn films have been released as cult works over the years, but everything seems to indicate that Chaos Walking will, for its part, be destined to sink into eternal oblivion. A godsend for its two main actors, probably very happy that this monumental flop – not to say embarrassing – does not mar their respective careers.
