Launched in 2012, the BP Scholarships are intended to encourage and support students with a passion for certain subjects. BP relies on talented and ambitious business & trading professionals, engineers and scientists.
Each year BP will offer up to ten Durham students a scholarship for the duration of their science, engineering, management or economics degree (available to students studying selected courses).
What does it mean to be a BP scholar?
Being a BP scholar will provide financial support of £3,000 per year, subject to satisfactory performance in assessments. Scholars have unique opportunities to experience first-hand what BP do – whether it’s using the latest technology to find oil and gas, building platforms in the ocean, developing low-carbon fuels and lubricants, working on the bustling trading floor or supporting the whole business through functions such as HR, Sales or Procurement.
In each year of their degree scholars will be invited to join BP for exclusive events and experiences such as the ‘Scholars Welcome Day’ in year 1 and, a three-day conference in year 2. Both events will enable students to build their understanding of the oil and gas industry and the opportunities that exist to apply their degree subject beyond graduation.
Meanwhile back on campus, BP will run more informal events and there will be opportunities to meet with interns who have spent a summer or year with BP, who are now in their final year at Durham before joining BP again as graduates.
Successful scholars will be fast tracked to an interview for an internship or graduate role, should they choose to apply later in their degree.
Can you combine this scholarship with other funding?
Other scholarship opportunities are also available at Durham. Undergraduates applying for or already in receipt of a corporate scholarship or bursary with an annual value of up to £1,500 may also apply to the BP scholarship scheme (providing that their funding source permits this). However, undergraduates receiving annual scholarship funding above £1,500 will not be eligible for the BP scheme.
How do you apply?
Undergraduates can apply for a scholarship in the first term of their first year at university. Eligible students will be contacted by their Department and sent details of how to apply. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and potential. The application process is very straightforward and is designed to give everyone the best chance to share their experiences with the BP team.
The first stage of the application process is the BP online scholarship application form. This is a really important part of the application process so do take time to work on it properly. The next stage is the online psychometric test in numeracy and verbal reasoning and a short video interview with successful students invited to a face to face interview on campus with one of the BP graduate recruitment team.
Applications are now open and closes 11:59pm Sunday 2nd December 2018.
