Pastoral Support: The Collegiate System

As a student at Durham University's Queen's Campus, you will become a member of one of the two Queen's Campus colleges, Stephenson College or John Snow College. The colleges provide support during your time at Durham University, have a wide range of activities for you to get involved with, and help you to meet other students.

“It’s nice being part of another community separate from your medical course and academic work. It’s good to have a personal tutor from your college that you can speak to as well as having academic tutors in the faculty.”

Bhavna Joti, Stage 1

You will be assigned a personal college tutor who can offer general pastoral support with any problem. Where the need for special support is identified, referral can be made to the central Student Services team.

Rowing on the Tees

“Colleges are a really great idea and mean that you can do things you wouldn't be able to at other universities. I'm nowhere near a university standard rower, but thanks to the collegiate system, I've been rowing for over a year and I'm secretary of my College's boat club… and I play the clarinet in the University's Concert Band. I really enjoy doing them, as you need a release from all things medicine every now and again.”

James Hilton, Stage 2
