Durham's School of Medicine Pharmacy and Health, led by Jane Macnaughton received a Bronze Award conferred from the November 2013 award round. This is in recognition of their work in developing a culture of gender equality, and helping women to progress their careers.

The awards recognise success in:

  • Developing employment practices to further and support the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEMM) departments in academia.
  • Progression of students into academia
  • Working environment for all staff

The Athena SWAN Charter evolved from work between the Athena Project and the Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN), to advance the representation of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM).
