Welcome to the School of Applied Social Sciences
Congratulations on securing your place to attend one of the following subject areas within the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University:
Welcome to the School of Applied Social Sciences. Academic and administrative colleagues very much look forward to working with you as you progress through your programme of studies.
The School has a strong reputation in research led education. We pride ourselves on our world leading research in social sciences. This encompasses research on marginalised and disadvantaged groups in communities and gender, violence and abuse, inequalities in access to higher education and social mobility, gender and sexualities, social aspects of health, sport, physical activity and nutrition. Our research underpins our teaching and you will have the opportunity to engage with information and ideas on a range of contemporary issues. We are associated with three research centres and work with colleagues across the university and beyond in pursuit of excellence in our research and education.
We are a collegial school. You are joining colleagues with a strong tradition for lively debate combined with support for students. I hope you will engage with us and become an integral part of life in the School of Applied Social Sciences. Good luck with your studies.Professor Linda McKie, Head of School
