School of Applied Social Sciences

Head of School's Welcome

Welcome to the School of Applied Social Sciences where we are engaged in a range of research on sociological issues from a multi-disciplinary base. We teach courses in Criminology, Sociology, Social Policy, Social Work and Sport. We have a large and vibrant postgraduate research community, with our research training delivered as part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognised NINE Doctoral Training Partnership.

We do world leading research in a range of sociological issues, but have particular strength in five key areas. Two of these overlap with the multi-disciplinary research centres that are housed within the School:

The other three key areas are:

  • Higher Education and Social Inequality;
  • Health; and
  • Transgressive Leisure.

We have over 50 years of expertise in the area of sociology and social policy teaching and research, and you can see some of the highlights here.
