Helen Schell - Dress Smart: Space-age Fashions

5th June 2018, 09:00 to 17th June 2018, 17:00, Prince Bishops Shopping Centre

An Art Durham event. Helen Schell specialises in art about space exploration and science of the cosmos. In empty shop windows within the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre she exhibits space inspired, smart material, ball-gowns, ‘The Moon Rocket Dress’ and ‘Beam Dress’. The costumes began as a commission with Durham University in 2012 for the project UN-Dress: Redress, and have been shown at the Science Museum, Durham Cathedral and shopping centres nationwide.
The works employ optical illusions in the form of geometric distortions and light manipulation. The Beam Dress is light reflective so take a picture using the flash on your phone!

Art Durham is a programme of creative arts events and exhibitions, and is part of Durham City Arts Festival, taking place throughout June 2018. For full programme details go to www.durhambid.co.uk/durham-city-arts-festival
