Alan Hollinghurst: The Sparsholt Affair
Durham Book Festival event
Join Booker prize-winning author Alan Hollinghurst as he discusses his long- awaited sixth novel, The Sparsholt Affair.
Chaired by Durham University sponsored Festival Laureate Andrew McMillan.
In 1940, two young men meet at Oxford University. Despite very different backgrounds, they both share the knowledge that with military call-up looming, they only have a year or so to study. The events of this year will affect many lives and set in motion the mystery at the heart of the novel.
Exploring themes of sexuality, art and family secrets, Alan Hollinghurst’s masterful novel takes us through several generations of uncertainty and change in British society: from the darkest days of the Second World War right up to the present decade.
Alan Hollinghurst is the author of acclaimed novels including The Line of Beauty and The Swimming-Pool Library.
