Desert wastes, pagan temples and the Nile Valley: locating Monasteries in Coptic Egypt
A lecture by James Taylor organised by the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland and the North East Ancient Egypt Society.
This lecture will explore the wide range of environments that are home to Coptic monasteries in Egypt. Using evidence drawn from the Wadi al-Natrun and the Thebaid area, this paper will aim to create a cohesive set of criteria for choosing a site suitable for the monastic life.
