Process Industries and Surface Science
We work with some of the world’s leading companies and our own spin-out businesses to commercialise our areas of research so that people across the world can benefit.
Drop a mobile phone in a puddle and it still works – because it’s protected by surface science.
A liquid-repellent coating invented in Durham University’s chemistry labs has waterproofed more than 200 million phones and has been used on shoes, hearing aids and pipette tips.
What’s more, surface science is being employed to collect drinking water from fog in dry climates, remove industrial pollutants from water and halt the spread of drug-resistant diseases.
Our scientists also develop efficient processes in chemical manufacturing to produce life-saving drugs and other healthcare products.
Our researchers are passionate about using science to tackle some of the global challenges in our society.
