Dr Nick Rosser talks about how his research is leading to a better understanding of the mechanics and processes which cause landslides and rock falls, to help develop early warning systems for vulnerable communities across the world. Dr Nick Rosser is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at Durham University. His primary research is focused upon the recognition of the role of material deformation characteristics in controlling the spatial and temporal nature of slope failure. More widely, Dr Rosser is actively engaged in research on natural hazards and risk, and the global and local impacts of disasters. The nature of this work, including its engagement with emerging technologies, requires interdisciplinary collaborations with Earth Scientists, Engineers and Social Scientists. How to Harness Geothermal Energy: Research at Durham University

Dr Charlotte Adams discusses how her research in to geothermal energy could help countries across the world to access this potential source of heat and power. Charlotte Adams (Née Nuttall) is the Research Manager for the BritGeothermal research partnership and is based in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University. Charlotte gained a PhD from Newcastle University while researching the removal of ecotoxic metals from abandoned mine drainage and has had a long interest in geothermal energy that began while working at Newcastle University on Coal Authority funded research which included temperature logging at several deep mineshafts in the UK. Charlotte joined Durham University in 2009 as the Business Research Coordinator for Durham Energy Institute, and has worked on several multidisciplinary projects with colleagues from the departments of Engineering, Anthropology, Geography, History and Earth Sciences that have focused upon the socio-technical aspects of energy use from generation to end user. Dr Mark Swinbank discusses how his research uses observations of distant galaxies to understand how galaxies and stars formed and evolved at just a fraction of the Universe's age. The research group in Durham contains some of the world’s leading researchers in astronomy, cosmology and galaxy formations, and has access to some of the world’s leading telescope facilities. Dr Mark Swinbank is an extra-galactic astronomer in the Institute for Computational Cosmology at the Durham University. His research interests include the formation and evolution of galaxies, galaxy clusters, large scale structure and galaxies in interaction.
