Durham in Top 25 of most international universities
(29 January 2021)
We’ve been named as one of the world’s most international universities by the Times Higher Education (THE).
Ranked 25th, the league table recognises Durham as one of the world’s best based on our high proportion of international students and staff, our collaborations with universities across the globe and our strong international reputation.
Research suggests that diverse communities of students improve the teaching and learning experience.
We’re very proud to have staff and students from over 130 countries, creating an outward-looking, globally-minded and inclusive University.
Our research spans the globe with partnerships, collaborations and projects on every continent.
Combined with our all-round student experience, this makes our graduates among the most highly sought-after in the world.
We believe international collaborations are vital in enhancing global knowledge for the benefit of societies across the world, including work to help in the fight against Covid-19. As part of this, our researchers are finding out if specially-trained dogs can sniff out the virus in people which could offer a new rapid, non-invasive diagnostic tool.
Our academics are also working with colleagues in a number of countries including Nepal and Indonesia to help people prepare for disasters, protect future generations from pollution, and to make cross-border trading safer.
In another collaboration with scientists in Germany as well as within the UK, our engineers have been inspired by nature to create what could be the first manufactured non-cuttable material. The material could be used in the security and health and safety industries.
An example of a project which sees researchers from across disciplines working together with patients and clinicians is Life of Breath where the team aim to make breathlessness and the associated suffering more visible.
Durham is recognised as one of the world’s leading universities as shown by our World Top 100 position in the QS World University Rankings 2021, where we are ranked 86th.
A record 19 Durham subjects are in the World Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, including 11 in the World Top 50.
Three of our subjects are in the World Top 10 - Theology and Religion (fourth), Archaeology (fourth) and Geography (tenth).
In the THE's Impact Rankings 2020 we're also in the world Top 50 for our contribution to four of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and in the world Top 100 for a further seven SDGs.
