Living Texts Research Group Book Launch: 'Echoing Voices in Italian Literature: Tradition and Translation in the Twentieth Century'

12th June 2018, 16:00, ER247, Elvet Riverside II, Durham Univeresity

You are warmly invited to the launch of a new edited volumeon classical reception and translation in twentieth-century Italian literature, hosted by the Living Texts Research Group and Durham Italian Seminar:

Echoing Voices in Italian Literature: Tradition and Translation in the Twentieth Century

Edited by Teresa Franco (Oxford) and Cecilia Piantanida (Durham) (Cambridge Scholars: 2018)

Presented by Dr Andrea Capra, translator and Reader in Greek Literature at Durham University, with the editors. The discussion will be held in English and we very much hope to see you all there!

This collection of essays explores classical reception and translation from modern languages as two different, yet synergic, ways to revisit and question literary canons and established traditions in twentieth-century Italy. Classical scholars and italianists investigate ‘tradition’ and ‘translation’ as mutually defining concepts of Italian modernity, to this day shaping definitions of ‘Italianness’ and ideas on identity, including authorial, literary, national and cultural. With its shifting focus, the volume deals with key issues such as individual and collective memory, poetics, literary voice, as well as the subversive potential of texts, ancient and modern, bringing to the fore new configurations of twentieth-century literature, culture and thought.
