Dr Sara Uckelman: Digital Humanities and Big Data: Introduction to the Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources

1:00pm, E245

Digital Humanities projects have become increasingly popular in recent years as a means of bringing computational power to non-scientific projects. But getting such projects going can often be difficult: people on the humanities side don't know what tools are available and thus don't know what to ask for, so the scientists don't know what they can give.

In this talk, I introduce one DH project that has been able to partially bridge that divide: The Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources (dmnes.org). While I'll speak a bit about the nature of the project, its use, and its motivations, the focus will be on why this project is of interest to an Innovative Computing Group of people, including past and future computational contributions. I'll conclude with discussing some of the pitfalls that face DH projects, and ways in which these pitfalls can be partly ameliorated.
