The project aims to support the development, transfer and implementation of innovative practices in preparing young people in Europe for responsible citizenship, in terms of their ability to understand and discuss quantitative evidence and statistics about key social phenomena that permeate civic life, such as migration, demographic changes, economic equality or unemployment among different subgroups. This area is of very high priority because of several documented needs and gaps: Statistical techniques taught and data sets used in current curricula (at the high-school and introductory university levels) are misaligned with the needs of citizenship, and are not geared to enable learners to transfer their skills to cope well with real civic demands. Further, few high school teachers in mathematics receive any training on how to teach statistics. As a result teachers overemphasize a narrow range of statistical techniques and computations, and pay too little attention to working with and understanding multivariate data that describe social trends, and to the analysis, interpretation and communication about the meaning of such data.
