Evaluation of Calderdale : Improving writing quality, using SRSD and memorable experiences

A research project of the School of Education.

Background

The project will test the impact of providing memorable experiences to pupils in Year 5 of primary school as a starting point for improving writing. Children will also be taught about the writing process using an adapted version of the well-tested intervention – Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) instruction.

The programme has been previously trialled in an EEF efficacy trial, with positive results (please find the evaluation report attached). This project will now test the programme at a larger scale and through a more sustainable ‘train the trainers’ model, with less direct involvement from the original project team and individuals who adapted the SRSD materials for use in UK schools. Members from the Calderdale Excellence Partnership will train trainers from Leeds Local Authority and CfBT. These trainers will then train teachers in the approach, with the trainers from Leeds Local Authority taking responsibility for training the teachers from their schools and the trainers from CfBT training the teachers from Lincolnshire schools.

In the previous trial the intervention was delivered over transition, with children receiving the intervention over the end of Year 6 and up until the end of the first term of Year 7. In this trial the complication of transition will be removed and children in intervention schools will instead receive the intervention for a full academic year in Year 5.
