Race, Crime and Justice: mapping Black Minority Ethnic (BME) and refugee groups and communities in the NE region

A research project of the Department of Sociology.

A partnership between three of the regions Universities [Durham, Northumbria and Teeside] are conducting research on Race, Crime and Justice in the North East (NE). The research is funded by the Ministry of Justice and the School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham. This proposal emerged from discussions between social policy and criminology academics based at Durham, Northumbria and Teesside Universities together with a representative of the Ministry of Justice. There was recognition that this is an urgent area of work and should be an initial priority. The collaborative research maps: the demographics; the key criminal justice and community safety issues facing BME and refugee groups in the region; and analyses police data on incidents affecting BME groups.

The research undertakes:

1) A quantitative mapping of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) populations in the NE.

2) An analysis of police data on incidents affecting BME and refugee groups.

3) A qualitative examination and analysis [in collaboration with local grass roots community agencies and local refugee, BME populations and community groups], of the key socio-economic and criminal justice issues affecting them; and also elicits suggestions from these group for ways of dealing with the issues raised.

The research incorporates both quantitative and qualitative methods, including focus groups and community consultation. A Chatham Houses seminar will take place at Durham University in November 2011 to deliver the findings to MoJ, key criminal justice agencies and community organisations.
