Scaling up Grade 1 assessment & monitoring in Lesotho

A research project of the School of Education.

Background and Aims

This project, in collaboration with the Seliba Sa Boithuto Trust will build on a previous pilot project, which was funded by the David & Elaine Potter Foundation. Teachers of Grade 1 children in Lesotho Primary schools and school principals will learn how to use the iPIPS assessment and how to interpret the results to inform their teaching and management strategies. A total of 150 schools will be invited to participate in the project plus teacher training staff from the College of Education. We hope to have close collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training and Lesotho College of Education to explore ways of making the assessment system sustainable into the future without the need for external funding. We will also be building the capacity of education officers from the MoET to be able to use the assessment materials to evaluate the impact of their own interventions in the primary school years.
