Gender, young people and schooling: Pathways for challenging gender norms (NINE DTP Fellowship)
A research project of the School of Education.
This research stems from Sarah's PhD research that explored how young people negotiate their gendered identities in, and through, school - with a primary focus on Physical Education (PE). This research found that young people are often 'trapped' to reproduce dominant notions of masculinity and femininity that limit opportunities to challenge these taken-for-granted assumptions.
The project is funded by the following grant.

The aims of this fellowship is to work with the three schools in which the previous PhD research was conducted to explore their interpretation of the data, identify strategies to make PE more gender-sensitive and inclusive, and to identify any potential barriers to change. Moreover, the project will deliver practitioner workshops with PE teachers and disseminate the research through national organisations including the Youth Sport Trust and the Association for PE. The intended outputs from the project will include articles targeting top educational journals, including Gender & Education and BERA; coupled with the development of practitioner resources to explore how best to use evidence to inform practice.
