Individuals and Contexts in Education
A research group of the School of Education.
This area of research examines the role of the individual and the influence of culture and context in education. This includes undertaking research from a psychological perspective, such as the role of motivation in education; and area which is supported by the Motivation in Education Research Group.
There is a strong overlap between some of the research in this area and that of the Assessment, Evaluation and Effectiveness theme as often involves collaboration with members of CEM in drawing upon the Centre's extensive database to examine issues germane to assessment and individuals’ learning. Researchers have a strong reputation in the areas of achievement motivation; working memory; the assessment, treatment and socio-emotional aspects of dyslexia.
The influence of context is also an area of focus for staff in this area, such international and intercultural issues in education and the development of intercultural competence. Staff in this area aim to develop understanding of education and intercultural communication in the context of global movements of people and the internationalisation of education.
