Who we are

Nomis allows you to access and download a wide range of official UK statistics. The service is provided by Durham University under contract to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The service is widely used by central and local government, the private sector, training organisations, and academia.

What we do

Nomis provides a free Web service ( through which customers can access and download data as preformatted reports or as fully customised tables. Data includes:

  • Census of Population (1981 - 2011)
  • Annual Population Survey
  • Annual Civil Service Employment Survey
  • Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings
  • Business Register and Employment Survey
  • Benefit claimants including the Claimant Count
  • Marriages and Divorces
  • Mortality by Underlying Cause
  • Population Estimates
  • Population Projections
  • UK Business Counts
  • Workforce Jobs

We provide a free helpdesk service which can assist you with finding statistics as well as using the website.

  • Create your own tabulations from multi-dimensional data series
  • Access the most recent figures as soon as they are published along with previous figures, in some cases back to the 1970s
  • Choose from a wide range of standard geographic areas including local authorities, constituencies, LEPs, wards, super output areas
  • Drill down to the most detailed levels (geography, industry etc.) by which data are published
  • Define your own areas and variables
  • Get output in a wide range of formats including browser (HTML), spreadsheets (XLS), text (CSV) and as maps
  • Integrated metadata
  • Automate downloads or create your own applications using our API (note: programming experience required)
