Biography

Paul joined the School after filling professorial posts at Warwick Business School, Nottingham Business School and Stirling School of Management, where he taught and researched entrepreneurship. Prior to this he was a Senior Research Fellow at Warwick Business School. He has also held research posts at Imperial College (Sir Philip and Pauline Harris Research Fellow) and Cranfield School of Management.

Paul is a visiting professor at Bodø Graduate School of Business, Norway. He is ranked as a prominent world entrepreneurship scholar with reference to the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) database (Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, 2006).

Paul is a former Associate Editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Foundation & Trends in Entrepreneurship, International Small Business Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Entrepreneurship and Small Business, Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. Paul was the co-guest editor of a special issue of Technology Analysis & Strategic Management (2006) which focused on Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Higher Education. He is a reviewer for the Babson Entrepreneurship conference series (2005-). His co-authored article published in Regional Studies (1994) relating to “Cross-National Comparisons of the Variation in New Firm Formation Rates” was re-published in 2007 as a landmark contribution with enduring value and influence in the development in the field of regional studies.

His most recent book with Dr. Deniz Ucbasaran and Professor Mike Wright relates to “Habitual Entrepreneurs” and was published in 2006 by Edward Elgar. In 2003, Scottish Enterprise published “Habitual Entrepreneurs in Scotland: Characteristics, Search Processes, Learning and Performance” by Westhead, Ucbasaran, Wright and Martin. In collaboration with Mike Wright (2000), Paul edited “Advances in Entrepreneurship: 3 Volumes” published by Edward Elgar.

He gave a keynote address at the Academy of Marketing Entrepreneurship conference, Birmingham (2007). Paul was an invited discussant at the First Global Enterprise Monitor (GEM) conference, Berlin (2004) and the Entrepreneurship Indicators Project conference, OECD, Paris (2005).

He has experience in consultancy for EIM Business & Policy Research, and has part and current links with OECD, Paris, the Department for Education and Employment, the Department for Trade and Industry, the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Wales, Shell UK Limited, and the United Kingdom Science Park Association.

Research Interests

Paul is exploring several new avenues relating to wealth creation. He is currently researching the impact of initiatives encouraging graduates to consider business ownership and/or careers in small firms; entrepreneurial teams; the internationalization of smaller private firms; the development of private family firms; and the habitual entrepreneurship phenomenon.
