Biography

Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze's research focuses on three main areas: Nineteenth-Century French literature and culture (Parody); French Cinema and Creative Writing.

Her first novel, La logique de l'amanite, published by Grasset, appeared in August 2015.

La logique de l'amanite won the Prix André Dubreuil du Premier Roman awarded by the Société des Gens de Lettres (December 2015) and the Prix Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco "coup de coeur des lycéens" (October 2016).

She has published numerous books and articles/chapters on Emile Zola, Naturalist and fin de siècle fiction, and parody. She has examined parody both in its cultural specificity in Nineteenth Century France and, more broadly, as a theoretical object (with particular reference to genre and reception theory). This has allowed her to explore the various ways in which parody raises questions about art, literature and representation.

She is also interested in the relationship between word and image at the end of Nineteenth-Century France, especially in the cross-fertilization between literature and visual and popular culture (pantomime, circus, posters).

Her second monograph focuses on French film director Claude Chabrol (Edinburgh University Press, 2018). She also has a strong interest in the French cinema of the 1920s and 1930s (Renoir and Carné) and on contemporary French cinema (Bruno Dumont).

She is a member of the advisory board of French film journal Ecrans and reviews for: Nineteenth-Century French Studies ; French Studies ; Les Cahiers Naturalistes ; Modern and Contemporary France ; Fabula ; Modern Language Review ; Histara (Histoire de l'art, histoire des représentations et archéologie) and Revue d'Histoire littéraire de la France (RHLF).

She has successfully supervised PhD theses in the fields of Nineteenth-Century French literature and culture and Cinema and is happy to receive expressions of interest from students willing to work in those fields.
