Biography

I completed my PhD on engaging men and boys in the prevention of men's violence against women in England in the Department of Sociology at Durham University in 2019. I am now undertaking an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department. This is building on my PhD research by exploring opportunities for the business sector to contribute to preventing violence against women and encouraging men and boys to play a role in such efforts. If you would be interested in discussing this work further, please get in touch.

My PhD research involved two main strands. First, investigating the contemporary landscape and future possibilities of work with men and boys to prevent men’s violence against women in the UK, by interviewing some of the activists playing a key role in the development of such efforts. Second, exploring how young men actually understand and use violence prevention campaigns, by conducting focus groups with men’s university sports teams facilitated by material from influential campaigns. Subsequently, among other things I have been part of a team carrying out research commissioned by the Government Equalities Office about how to engage effectively with men and boys about the impacts of masculine gender norms in the UK.

I am actively involved in the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) here at Durham. Previously, I undertook a MSocSc in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare at the University of Tampere in Finland, and a BSc in Sociology at Aston University. Since I first started studying sociology, feminist ideas have had a profound impact on me, and these continue to provide the inspiration for my work.
