Biography

My academic career has developed along two main strands. One is teaching and research in Hispanic literature and cultural studies; this field was the centre of my scholarly activity while I worked as an associate lecturer in the Department of Romance Studies at the University of Barcelona. The other strand of my professional activity is second language acquisition and pedagogy, which I have been working on for 20 years in the UK and in Spain.

After I was appointed as Spanish Language Programme Coordinator in the Centre for Foreign Language Study (CFLS) at Durham University, in 2014, second language acquisition and pedagogy became the centre of my academic activity. At present, my scholarship consists of practice-based research around the promotion of independent work skills among students, with a focus on motivation and the development of the feedback cycle. I am a member of the steering committee of the UNILANG certification scheme (http://www.unilang.website/), aimed at helping UK and Ireland university students to articulate what their language learning outcomes mean in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with a view to enhancing employability, mobility and internationalisation. In my current role as UNILANG Lead Examiner, I have been invited to deliver presentations and workshops for colleagues in other UK universities, and I have created training materials to guide higher education teachers in the application of the scheme.
