Research and Innovation Services
Welcome to Research and Innovation Services (RIS). We are here to provide guidance, expert advice and hands-on support to help you achieve your research ambitions. Through working in partnership with you, your department and faculty we provide support to help you in all aspects of research and research-related work, including: securing research funding; working with research partners; undertaking knowledge exchange, engaging external stakeholders and demonstrating impact; commercialising outputs; ensuring good research practice and supporting the professional development of researchers.
The formation of Research and Innovation Services in September 2016 brings together members of the Research Office, Business and Innovation Services (DBIS) and Finance teams. Whilst our new web pages are under construction, please refer to the Research Office web pages for information about research governance, grants, equipment and training, the DBIS web pages for support with business engagement, research commercialisation and impact, and the research Finance web pages for information on research financial management.
Working closely with departmental Directors of Research and the Deputy Heads of Faculty (Research), we aim to align our priorities, practices and structures with those of departments, research centres and institutes. The RIS directorate consists of six delivery teams, as shown in the structure chart and summarised as follows:
Providing support to increase the quality and value of funding applications and embed good practice in the identification of opportunities and development of successful proposals. Particularly focusing on large, multi-partner projects and providing support for horizon scanning, bid development and management.
Delivering institution-wide pre-award and post-award operational support for all research and research-related work. The team supports the development of funding proposals and handles the financial and contractual management of research projects throughout their lifecycle – providing a joined-up ‘conception-to-completion’ service.
Commercialisation and Economic Development
Managing the University’s intellectual property portfolio, developing commercial projects, spin-outs and licensing. This team will also provide support for major strategic initiatives, including regional development projects. Advice and support to protect, exploit or commercialise ideas and intellectual property.
Partnerships and Engagement
Leading the management of Durham’s research-related strategic partners and linking closely to other teams in the directorate to develop successful projects and proposals. This team also provides support for the development and delivery of research impact across the economic, policy and cultural/heritage domains.
Research Policy and Ethics
Providing cross-institutional support for research ethics and governance and contributing to the development of university policies, guidelines and processes. Producing and delivering information, advice and educational materials on policies, procedures and good research practice.
Providing cross-institutional support for strategic and operational developments to deliver Durham’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission in 2021 and subsequent assessments.
