Research and Impact

Our 70 members of academic staff consistently produce and publish high impact research spanning all subdisciplines of psychology. We provide a world-class research environment for postgraduate students across a huge variety of specialisms. Much of our research is interdisciplinary both within the department and outside of the department, having published with co-authors in 43 countries across 6 continents since 2014.

Our vision

To be a broad-based, diverse, and inclusive community of psychological scientists where innovative and rigorous research is employed to understand the principles and processes of mind, brain and behaviour.

By harnessing this knowledge, we endeavour to effect positive change for and enhance the well-being of, individuals, families, communities, and organisations, across the life-course.

Our Strategy 

People 

We will recruit and retain outstanding academics from across the world, who address exciting, cutting-edge and varied aspects of psychological research, to build a scholarly community that spans the breadth of basic and applied psychological science, from the biological to the social. 

Organisation 

Our structure and organisation will reflect synergies across our academy to support the development of ambitious research projects, capitalise on a data-rich environment, and to ensure optimisation of opportunities to engage with the public, public bodies, industry and policy-makers thus ensuring our work has real and demonstrable impact regionally, nationally and internationally. 

Support 

Our culture of support will ensure that our academic and professional support staff are enabled to contribute significantly to our vision and strategy. Mentorship, Athena Swan and EDI ideals, the development of an equitable workload for all, and a striving for continuous improvement, are central to the fabric of our ethos. 

Resources 

We will ensure members of the Department of Psychology are appropriately resourced and supported in terms of time, training and facilities, to achieve their goals and those of our vision, by producing world-class outputs, becoming world leaders in their fields, driving the narrative of research enquiry, affecting behaviour change through their research, achieving significant funding and raising the profile of the department nationally and internationally. 

Research-led teaching 

By fostering a community of staff and students and incorporating cutting-edge research into our teaching programmes, we will ensure the next generation of psychological scientists will have a broad and current base from which to furnish their understanding of the world around them, thus becoming innovative, integrative, resourceful, and successful in their endeavours.
