Aims

  • The module services the overall objectives of the PGCert - to contextualise, and add value to (as a separate issue), the formal ILT accreditation requirements, enabling participants to:
  • identify and make proper use of relevant theories of learning and teaching;
  • plan, execute and evaluate their own professional development.

Content

  • To be negotiated between participants, the departmental mentors, programme tutors or any other person designated for this purpose by the department, and staff of the Centre, with final authorisation confirmed by the Management Committee.

    • Upon completion of the module, newly appointed staff will be able to:
    • demonstrate their capacity to apply pedagogic and/or action research appropriate to the teaching of their subject area or discipline in the production of a substantial piece of work appropriate to their subject areas and departments/schools.

      Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

      • By negotiation and completion of a research-based project relevant to the teaching of their subject area or discipline, e.g. a broad theoretical analysis, critical review of literature on teaching in a subject area, conference paper, article for refereed discipline-specific journal, the design of a set of learning materials or alternative forms of assessment or evaluation, or other appropriate research project, provided that the choice is amendable to internal and external examination using the assessment criteria and that (where applicable) the work undertaken can be located within a theoretical framework.
      • Programme participants will negotiate and carry out a discipline-based assignment under the joint supervision of staff in the Centre, programme tutors and/or mentors. 'Teaching' will be undertaken by colleagues and mentors within departments/schools, to a minimum entitlement of six contact hours per participant.
