Aims

  • Develop students' ability to master the knowledge and understanding at an advanced level of key issues in the conceptualisation and practice of leadership.
  • Provide students with the opportunity to develop the ability to critically understand current approaches and empirical research in the field of leadership studies.
  • Provide students with the ability to increase their professional effectiveness as leaders.
  • Provide students with the opportunity to enhance their communication, organisational, problem solving and analytical skills.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • Upon successful completion of the module, the students will have:
  • a specialist knowledge of the nature of leadership from a number of perspectives;
  • a critical appreciation of the assumptions, implications and limitations of leadership studies.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Learning outcomes will be met through a combination of lectures, groupwork, case studies and discussion, supported by guided reading. The written assignment will test students' understanding of relevant concepts and their ability to apply and interpret what they have learned to the analysis of a particular issue in depth. The group presentation will test students' ability to work effectively in collaboration with others and to critically assess the relevance and validity of others' views.
