What we do

MES workshop technician in action
Mechanical Engineering Services (MES) provide a professional and efficient design and manufacturing service for teaching and research within the Department of Physics. We will design and construct equipment for teaching, research and support areas within the Physics Department. We can provide a contract service for those departments within the University, who do not have access to the skills and equipment we can provide. MES have a number of CNC and conventional machines, welding and soldering equipment and computer facilities to support teaching and research within the Physics Department.

Leadership

Mechanical Engineering Services is managed by Mr S Lishman (MES Supervisor) and is supported by six MES technicians Mr A Davies, Mr M Robertshaw, Mr LJ Bainbridge, Mr A Crosby , Mr K Ring and Mr R Borthwick. Staff are experienced in using CAD drawing packages and CNC machines.

MES provides

Design and Construction

  • We design any required mechanical equipment with the use of the latest computer software packages in Computer Aided Design.
  • Highly trained machinists operating 2, 3 and 4 axis CNC milling machines
  • A comprehensive welding facility using both TIG and MIG welders

Research support

  • We design, construct and support all departmental research activities even when they require us to work off site.

Teaching Courses

  • We can organise and run formal teaching courses in MES Techniques for Undergraduate or Post Graduate students. PG students should first contact their academic supervisor who will liaise with the workshop.

General

  • We provide general advice and guidance on mechanics and mechanical theory and best working practices, including relevant safety issues.

Jobs can be booked into the workshop via the Physics Database system - for internal access click here and for external access click here.
