I read straight Philosophy at Durham and, when I return from my Year Abroad to Hong Kong University, will be writing a dissertation exploring the ethics of modern state surveillance. The breadth of the course has let me explore many scholarly avenues, whilst challenging me to steadily improve my writing and argumentation. Outside of academic life, I’ve had room to pursue multiple varied interests such as the University Air Squadron, Union Society and Competitive University Cheerleading Squad, and at my college, Trevelyan, pastimes like rowing, choirs and musicals. The open-mindedness that Philosophy gives you led me to pursue a year abroad to Asia. There, I hope to gain an Eastern perspective on Durham’s Western analytical course and to forge new intellectual connections, increasing my confidence by immersing myself in a new culture. Finally, I’ve enjoyed Philosophy here so much that after my Bachelors, I’m considering a Master’s programme.
