Durham University: who we are and what we do.

A new beginning

Starting at university is an exciting and enriching experience. However, it also entails big adjustments and will mark the first time many of our students have lived away from home. It's important that you do all you can to encourage your son or daughter to settle in to their new lifestyle. They need to know they have your support and trust.

There are a number of practical things you can do to help ensure those first few weeks go smoothly. Budgeting advice, cookery lessons, and laundry guidance can prove invaluable to a new student.

The first few weeks will offer many opportunities for meeting people and making new friends. Colleges and departments provide excellent venues for this, as do the numerous Freshers' Week events. The University has a growing number of student-led societies, offering everything from film-making to sky-diving. Encourage your son or daughter to get involved!
