Scaling the Galleries - Helen Mort
Climb through the galleries of the Oriental Museum with award-winning poet and climber Helen Mort. This event is part of Durham Book Festival 2018.
To coincide with the museum's ‘Scaling the Heights’ exhibition about mountains and mountaineering literature, Helen Mort makes a welcome return to Durham to present a selection of her poetry and prose interspersed with excerpts from contemporary accounts of historic Himalayan climbing expeditions. The audience will 'climb' through the museum collection, listening to readings along the way. We will begin at Base Camp in the Chinese collection on the bottom floor and work our way up until we conquer the summit, by arriving at the exhibition on the top mezzanine floor to celebrate our achievement with conversation and refreshments.
Helen Mort is a multiple award-winning poet. Her collection Division Street was shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards and the T. S. Eliot Prize and she has made regular radio appearances on The Verb, Poetry Please and Woman's Hour. Her passion for rock climbing and the history of mountaineering feature heavily in her most recent work No Map Could Show Them.
