The Colleague Conversation Compass

The Colleague Conversation Compass provides a framework of key conversational points, by which we can navigate through individual experiences, select the focus of interactions and enable a tailored personal approach. The individual experiences can include, but may not be limited to:

Welcoming new colleagues (Onboarding & Induction) – As people join the Durham community as colleagues the Colleague Conversation Compass can be used to support the establishing and maintaining of strong psychologically safe working relationships.

Continuously improving (Reviewing, reframing and refocusing performance)–The Colleague Conversation Compass facilitates the opportunity to focus discussions as required, for example to fit in line with departmental planning, specifically highlighting such areas as ‘Objectives’, ‘Strategy’ and ‘Development’. The Colleague Conversation Compass also enables these topics to remain live and easily available to pick up in ongoing discussions.

Hybrid working – The impact of the pandemic has meant that we have all been, and will continue to working differently. Difference in working involves a variety of remote, on campus and a mixture of those experiences. As we move into and explore our new future ways of working, individuals within teams as well as whole teams, can use the Colleague Conversation Compass to explore further nuanced hybrid ways of working. Focusing on Check-in and Wellbeing, but also supporting people as they continue to work in very different circumstances.

People Change (Reboarding) – The focus and benefits realised in taking time and effort to successfully ‘onboard’ new members of your team is widely known about and accepted. The concept of ‘reboarding’, following a significant restructure or People Change, can help to reestablish connections, support the embedding process for the new ways of working and significantly increase the successful outcomes.

Keeping in touch with colleagues who can't work from home

Managers are encouraged to keep in touch with those members of staff who are not able to work from home. A spreadsheet has been developed to log these communications and includes some links to documents to help managers undertake conversations with their team members. Click here to access.

Please note once completed this spreadsheet needs to be kept secure by managers in line with GDPR.
