Team Leader Essentials

Overview

This programme has been designed to help people who are aspiring to be a team leader or who are new to a team leader role to develop the relevant skills and knowledge.

The programme will be delivered using a blended learning model with all sessions being facilitated online. The programme is externally accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management and the learning underpinned by their MyLeadership e-learning tool.

Learning Outcomes

To understand essential team leader skills including;

  • how to build the trust of the team
  • how to inspire the team to give you their best efforts
  • how to set and achieve valuable goals
  • how to respect all different cultures.

Content

To complete the Team Leader Essentials programme delegates must undertake the following:

Taught online live sessions

  • The Role of the Team Leader and Building Trust
  • Inspiring
  • Time Management
  • Understanding HR
  • Health and Wellbeing

Prior to each taught session it is expected that delegates will watch the required Institute of Leadership and Management webinar, further details of this will be provided at the launch event.

In-house eLearning courses:

These modules have been chosen to follow recommendation 14 of The Respect Commission Oversight Group

"The Respect Commission Working Group should explore training options in consultation with DCAD and Organisational Development for staff with people management responsibilities (from Heads of Section to PIs and Directors of Research, etc.), particularly in relation to: performance management, dispute resolution/conflict management, professional development support (particularly for more junior colleagues), wellbeing, understanding of the policies and procedures for addressing behavioural misconduct and the mechanisms for their implementation."

Duration and Delivery

The Team Leader programme represents a commitment of 4 months, this includes:

  • Attendance at 6 live online learning and discussion events
  • Self-directed learning between each module
  • Completion of in-house eLearning courses.

The live online learning sessions will be run by Zoom or Teams and will be interactive. You will need a broadband connection to complete the online learning as well as access to a computer with a camera and audio capability to take part in the discussion sessions (we'll need to see and hear each other).
