Education experts to advise Government

Three of our education experts have been appointed to a Cabinet Panel to help Government decide which policies work and which don’t.

Dr Beng Huat See, Dr Nadia Siddiqui and Professor Stephen Gorard will be part of the What Works Trial Advice Panel (TAP).

They will advise Government on how to evaluate the impact of its education policies and interventions to see which ones are working, which ones are not and why.

This is an area our researchers have extensive expertise in as part of the Durham University Evidence Centre for Education (DECE).

Improving learning for all

Our academics carry out research in a wide range of areas with a focus on tackling disadvantage, improving pupil attainment, fair access and educational justice.

For example, studies by DECE have looked at the difference an effective teacher can make, what impact poverty can have on children’s attainment, and how schools can contribute to pupils’ mental health and well-being.

The team is also working on projects to establish what is causing teacher shortages in the UK, whether the Pupil Premium funding is managing to close the attainment gap between poorer children and their peers, and how teacher workload can be effectively addressed.

 Advising Government

The What Works Trial Advice Panel consists of experts from outside Government and the Civil Service and provides advice to policy teams and analysts about the design of impact evaluations used to assess policies and interventions.

This is to ensure that any impact evaluation is designed properly and conducted rigorously before any decisions are made about the effectiveness of a policy or intervention. This is of course crucial in education as policies can have a direct positive or negative impact on pupils and our schools.
