Durham student wins regional award
(8 December 2005)
Psychology student, Jennifer Burt, has won the 2005 Undergraduate Achievement award at the Evening Chronicle’s Young Achievers ceremony.
This was the fifth annual awards, which highlights youngsters who have achieved, often in the face of adversity. Jennifer won the award for her outstanding work with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis patients. Her research led her to identify that 70% of people with PBC are affected by long term fatigue. The results of her work were published in the medical journal Gut in November, and the doctors she worked with have now won a £200,000 grant to research ways of combating the symptoms and improving life for the patients. Her discovery will help change the way patients with PBC are treated around the world.
